RON SANDERS
Ron Sanders, Signature Member of the Paint America Association, received his BFA in illustration at the Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated with honors. He has been represented by agents in New York and Chicago and has produced illustrations in a variety of media for advertising and promotional material, books, calendars and newspapers. His clients have included Spike tv, Doubleday Bookclub, Harcourt, McGraw Hill, The Boy Scouts, regional newspapers and others. Ron also has experience in digital prepress for the printing industry where he broadened his understanding of color.
With a strong foundation in representational art and an introduction to the painting methods of the old masters at CCAD, Ron pursued the traditions of academic oil painting after college. This lead to the exhibition of his work in more than a dozen galleries nationwide. Later, Ron studied impressionism and alla prima painting with George Strickland, president of the PAPA, and with Chinese artist, Huihan Liu. Ron continues to explore the balance between the formalities of academic work and the expressive and romantic qualities of impressionist influences through the medium of oil paint. His 30+ years experience as a commissioned fine artist and gallery painter have led to the exhibition of his work in prestigious national juried shows as well as public, private, corporate, and museum collections.
Plein air painting demands a direct statement of color produced by light. Learn how to quickly mix clean , bright colors and beautiful neutrals through an understanding of principle primaries and the four properties of color: hue, temperature, value and chroma. Develop a sensitivity to temperature based color common to outdoor painting and how to mix color using analogous vs. complimentary colors. Through lecture, studio exercises, demonstration and field painting students will learn to build better landscapes by “seeing, simplifying, and subordinating.” In combination with compositional tools, students will plan paintings for bolder form, increased spacial depth, and a stronger statement of focal point that will take your paintings from ho-hum to wow!

KATHARINE CARTWRIGHT
The famous art critic, Arthur Danto, once wrote "There are two necessary criteria for something to be deemed 'a work of art' - it must have meaning and it must embody that meaning." This workshop embraces that philosophy and helps students at all ability levels learn how to create unique and meaningful art. Kathy's successful method demonstrates how to escape the ordinary and paint the extraordinary.
Because all great paintings begin with a great concept, students first learn how to develop a concept for their own paintings by using an effective method developed by Kathy. The next step is to translate that concept into a working thesis, or artist's statement. Kathy then demonstrates how to use that thesis to create a series of paintings that is uniquely meaningful, technically consistent and masterful. Daily instruction is followed by student engagement in thisthink - write - paint - share workshop. By the week's end, students will have all the tools necessary to create unique and meaningful art for a life time.
Kathy teaches with warmth, humor, enthusiasm, and insight. As an experienced teacher and award-winning artist, she is able to help students develop and improve technical skills in painting as well as concept development. This workshop provides painters in all mediums with the necessary tools required to create great art!
