All Levels Outdoor & Studio

Find the extraordinary in the ordinary. This class by watercolor artist and author Michael Killelea will help you learn that your vision is more important than the subject in your painting. Light, color and atmosphere all play a part in Killelea’s plein air artwork and he will teach you to develop your skills in these areas through demonstrations and hands-on critique of your class efforts.
Discover the satisfaction of painting outdoors in the special late day light. Through his demonstrations and hands on critique, watercolor artist and author Mike Killelea will help you develop your skills and the vision to see the beautiful images that fill the world around you.
STERLING EDWARDS

WATERCOLOR: August 25 -29 '08
All Levels Studio Class

Sterling Edwards developed his own unique style of painting with watercolors after being influenced by watercolor master Zoltan Szabo. Interpretations of natural settings are the subjects of most of Sterling's paintings. Using primarily large brushes, Sterling focuses on the mood of the subject as much as he does on the shapes. Rather than trying to replicate the subject as it appears, he will often exaggerate colors, maximize light and dark values, and stylize shapes to suit his personal interpretation. The result is an expressive watercolor painting consisting of a strong relationship of interlocking positive and negative shapes supported by a sound composition and complimentary color scheme.

DAVID LUSSIER

OIL: Plein Air September 22-26 '08
All levels Outdoors

David Lussier's plein air landscapes reflect an interest in strong Impressionistic brushwork and the value relationships of color, as influenced by Robert Henri, George bellows and Emile Gruppe. David's oil landscapes feature bold strokes from a narrow palette of colors, conveying an emotional energy that begs the viewer to return for a second look.
David is an artist almost entirely devoted to plein air painting outdoors. His studio paintings are always done from a combination of pencil sketches, oil sketches and notations completed while on location.
MARK FARINA

OIL: Plein Air October 13-17 '08
All Levels Outdoors & Studio

Mark Farina enjoys the challenge of painting a variety of subject matter, land/seascapes, architecture, still-life and the figure, but being an outdoor person, painting en plein air suits him to a tee.
Plein Air painting is a relatively modern (since the invention of portable tube paints, circa 1850) genre of painting. He feels it is a truthful way of painting as opposed to relying on photos. The artist and nature are in direct contact. Conditions such as weather, light and sometimes unusual happenings all add the charm and challenge of painting outdoors on the spot. For himself, pulling off a good plien air painting is extremely gratifying and fun (regardless of the outcome).

WATERCOLOR Plein Air October 20-24 '08
All Levels Outdoors

Judi Wagner prides herself in sharing anything that she has learned over 40 years, with a sense of humor and a spontaneity that fosters student enthusiasm. All materials are explained and shown. Next is a lecture/demonstration, hopefully kept to an hour approximately, so that the student painting time can begin. Judi believes that the WORKSHOP IS YOURS, not hers. Staying with this group and helping where needed boosts the confidence of the students and allows a "getting to know" situation.
In the late afternoon, the group comes inside for the critique of the day's work, starting with the instructor and then the students. By using the acetate overlay placed over the paintings, corrections can be SUGGESTED without ever touching the students' works themselves. An overhead mirror allows the group comfortable viewing by seeing the paintings in reverse, a mirror image of your work. It is not a critique of individual work, though each artist prospers, but a discussion of the Principles of Painting.

Use your ordinary photographs to product professional, eye-catching paintings the easy way, using a step-by-step process that frees the artist within each student!
By working with a value map and limited palette of transparent colors, students will learn to combine the glow of loose watercolor with the precision detail of photorealism.  Glowing darks, texturing techniques and how easy it is to correct mistakes will be demonstrated.  Classes include hands on demonstrations every morning and afternoon with individual instruction for each person.  Students may explore the techniques demonstrated or work on individual projects.  Expect to have fun!
